National governments and EU policymakers are currently taking decisions on the next EU budget that will influence the next ten years of support to cultural activities that benefit everyone who lives in Europe.

we are more (2010-2013) is a Europe-wide arts advocacy campaign set up by Culture Action Europe. It will use the upcoming EU political and financial negotiations for the period 2014-2020 as a timely opportunity to develop and sharpen the arguments used when advocating for arts and culture. The ultimate goal of the campaign is to contribute to a strengthened recognition of the role of arts and culture in the development of our European societies. The concrete campaign objectives focus on improving the quality and quantity of support that the sector receives from 2 key EU policies (the Culture Programme – providing direct support to cultural co-operation projects, and EU regional development policies – supporting cultural interventions as key contributions to social, economic and territorial development). The aim is for the campaign to function both as an eye-opener for policy-makers at local, regional and national level, and as a mobilisation and professional development tool for the sector.

Apesar de a União Europeia ser uma das regiões mais ricas do mundo, 17% da sua população não tem os meios necessários para satisfazer as suas necessidades mais básicas.

A pobreza é normalmente associada aos países em vias de desenvolvimento nos quais a subnutrição, a fome e a falta de água limpa e potável são desafios quotidianos. Contudo, a Europa também é afectada pela pobreza e pela exclusão social, onde apesar de estes problemas poderem não ser tão gritantes, são ainda assim inaceitáveis. A pobreza e a exclusão de um indivíduo implicam o empobrecimento de toda a sociedade. A Europa só pode ser forte se utilizar ao máximo o potencial de cada um dos seus cidadãos.

Não há nenhuma solução milagrosa para acabar com a pobreza e com a exclusão social mas uma coisa é certa: não podemos vencer esta batalha sem si. É tempo de renovarmos o nosso compromisso para com a solidariedade, justiça social e maior inclusão. Chegou o momento do Ano Europeu Contra a Pobreza e a Exclusão Social.

Um valor fundamental da União Europeia é a solidariedade, particularmente importante em tempos de crise. A palavra “União” diz tudo – enfrentamos juntos a crise económica e é esta solidariedade que nos protege a todos.
